Nighttime Car Safety Tips

Summer nights might bring along fewer hours of darkness. However, they also give rise to a lot of nighttime activity. Good weather and pleasant conditions mean people might stay out later. There might be more safety risks present for drivers and their vehicles – both on the road and in their own driveways. What can you do to keep your car safe at night?a car parked on the side of a road

Safety While Driving

Anytime you drive at night, you face safety risks that you wouldn’t in daylight. You lack the visibility you have during daylight. Therefore, your best bet is to slow down and remain vigilant. Never assume that the road you drive every day in daylight is the same after dark.

·        Keep your headlights on and do not exceed the speed limit. Make use of your high beams with you are on dimly lighted roads. However, dim them when another vehicle approaches.

·        If you drive in populated areas, stay under the speed limit. Try to give yourself some extra space between sidewalks, pedestrians and your vehicle. It is easy not to see someone walking close to the vehicle.

·        Keep your doors locked, and do not stop for someone you do not recognize.

·        Do not use your mobile device. However, keep it turned on and nearby in case of accidents.

·        If a person or animal walks in front of the vehicle, immediately apply full brake pressure and try to stop. Make use of your horn.

·        If you become stranded on the side of the road, use your emergency lights and hazard flashers. Walk a safe distance away from the road to call for help.

Safety When Parking

People always worry about the potential for vehicle theft, vandalism or weather damage when leaving their cars outside at night. Yet, you can take practical steps to reduce these threats:

·        Park your car close to your home, preferably in the back of the property. If you can, place a motion-activated light near the driveway.

·        If you have a garage, then park the vehicle inside and close the door.

·        Always lock your doors and arm your security system.

·        Do not leave any possessions visible in the vehicle. Lock your glove compartment.

·        Don’t park under trees if you can help it. Storms or high winds could cause branches to fall.

Insurance For Damage

Your car insurance policy might provide assistance in the event of nighttime wrecks or other damage. However, you might need to carry coverage - such as collision & comprehensive protection to achieve this security. These are the portions of your coverage that pay for damage or loss to your own vehicle. If you don't have it already, then ask your Longoria Insurance agent to apply it to your policy the next time you renew coverage.
