How to Prevent Slip and Fall Accidents at Your Home Before the Holidays

image of holiday party tableThe holidays often means sharing your home with more people. It can be a fantastic way to spend time with loved ones. Friends gather. Even coworkers are welcome.

Yet, with more people also comes higher risk. Homeowners can take steps now to protect themselves and others from such risks. Home insurance may cover any losses that occur, but preventing them is best. Here's how to do so.

Be Responsible Party-Throwers

If you aim to host a party, be responsible for those who attend. You may be liable for their actions. In particular, monitor alcohol use. Cut off those who may become a high risk to themselves or others. These individuals are some of the most likely to fall in a home. Most importantly, be sure they get home safely. Try planning an event with limited alcohol available. Keep potent alcohol out of the mix.

Driveways and Walkways

Prevent accidents outside by keeping all pathways clean. If snow or ice is a concern, remove it, tell people to watch for this risk and do your best to maintain clear paths. It is not always possible. However, using salt, sand, or other products can help. Be proactive about this risk.

Carpeting and Rugs

High heels, slippery shoes, and lots of people create a higher risk of falls within the home. Look for carpeting and rugs that can cause a person to trip. Be sure the edges lay flat against the floor. When possible, remove rugs altogether. This eliminates a key risk. Be sure to alert people of hidden steps, too. Avoid rugs or surfaces with looped material. This can hook into a shoe and cause a fall.

Look for Hidden Trip Hazards

Imagine a group of people walking through the hallway. What could they trip over? Small items, such as toys are a concern. Remove pet food bowls and water dishes. Get rid of any type of stand or table that is not necessary. Be sure there is enough space to walk between furniture. Keep the flow of people on a path that is safe. You should also always keep people out of certain areas of the home. For example, you might want to allow guests only in your home's main floor, not a basement or upstairs.

It may seem silly to consider these factors. Yet, home insurance claims for slips and falls can be costly. Avoid them by keeping your home safe. This is particularly important when hosting an event. Your guests will be happy they did not trip as well.
