Carrying Safety Equipment on Your Boat

boat speeding on waterWhenever you take to the water, your boat faces risks. You also face risks yourself. Negligent risks could lead to increases in your boat insurance costs.

Protecting yourself and your vessel means possessing the proper operational equipment. Certain operational equipment can increase your awareness of your surroundings. They can thus make you safer. With the correct safety guards, you can improve your risks on the water.

Safety Equipment to Increase Your Awareness

Boating hazards might include other craft, water levels, hidden rocks and off-limits areas. By avoiding these problems, you can improve your safety risks on the water.

Maintaining your awareness on the water helps you avoid potential hazards. A variety of operational equipment can help you do that.

  • Some boaters use flag signals to communicate with others on the water or on land. You might use flags to notify others about standard navigational procedures and emergencies. Carry all required flags in your craft, and always consider how optional flags may help you.
  • Ensure that your boat carries a radio and horn system. Certain localities require you to use radio or horn signals in their boundaries. Some boats may not have these items installed automatically. However, you can often buy remote equipment to help you stay in touch with others.
  • All boaters need to carry maps or charts for the waterways in which they operate. They can help you keep within legal operating lanes and avoid underwater hazards.
  • Carry a manual compass with you at all times. Many boaters now can carry sensitive GPS equipment besides traditional navigational guides. However, electronics are not foolproof. A manual compass could always help you protect in case of electronic failures.
  • Always carry proper lighting and signal equipment in the boat. Most boats have to legally carry lights of some form. Lights help you signal to other boaters, and to navigate at night or in non-ideal visibility.
  • Keep the proper anchoring and mooring equipment on hand at all times.
  • Never leave the dock without the right lifesaving equipment on hand. This should include life jackets and other floatation devices.

Most jurisdictions have strict requirements for boaters to carry certain equipment in a boat. Always know what the state requires before you hit the water.

Furthermore, never hit the water without the correct operational requirements and boat insurance. You might need a boating license in certain states. Other states need minimum boat insurance levels. You have to make sure you meet the proper qualifications before you start an excursion.

We’ve got you covered. Raymond Longoria Insurance can help you get a boat insurance policy to meet your needs. Call us at (888) 296-0345 for more information.
