Busting 3 Common Flood Myths

Jeep on Flooded RoadThough certain areas are more prone to flooding, floods can happen anywhere and at any time. In fact, floods are the most common natural disaster in the country—and the most expensive disaster to recover from. But many people think that flood insurance is unnecessary because of various things they hear, whether true or not.

Skipping out on valuable coverage because of a myth is never a good plan. To help educate you, we've compiled three of the most common flood insurance myths and the reason why they're false.

Myth #1: A Flood Will Not Occur Near My Home.

Just because you don't live in a flood zone doesn't mean your neighborhood won't experience flooding. About 25 percent of all flood insurance claims come from people who live in areas with only a low to moderate flood risk. A sewer line can break, a nasty storm can blow through or snowmelt can seep into your home. The possible sources of a flood are countless.

Myth #2: Flood Insurance Is Too Expensive.

It goes without saying that paying your flood insurance premiums is more affordable than paying out-of-pocket for the cleanup and restoration process after a flood occurs. If you do live in a flood zone, this coverage should be a no brainer. And if you live in a low-risk area, premiums are likely to be more affordable, so it's worth your consideration.

Myth #3: Federal Assistance Will Help Me If There's A Flood.

While some flooding situations are supported by federal funds, it's not often a source of money you can rely on. First, the president must declare the flood a disaster. And even if you receive funds, they are generally in the form of a loan with interest. However, flood insurance provides much more comprehensive protection after a flood for only the cost of your deductible. This money can be used for drying, cleaning, restoration and other cleanup efforts.

We'll tell you the truth about coverage. Call Raymond Longoria Insurance at (956) 581-1034 for more information on Laredo flood insurance.
