If you live in a state that requires drivers to carry McAllen auto insurance, you most likely want to find the least expensive premiums. If you have a good driving record, this shouldn't be a concern. However, if you are charged with one of several violations, your insurance rates may go up. In some situations, even a minor infraction such as a seat belt violation may raise your rates.

Seat belt violations vary from state to state and in some states if you are charged with a moving violation for not wearing a seat belt or if your passenger was not wearing a seat belt, your insurance rates may increase. If you own a vehicle that was made after 1963, it must have seat belts installed in the vehicle and to avoid the risk of a ticket and higher insurance payments, you must wear the seat belt. There are exceptions to the seat belt law. A seat belt is not mandatory for motorcycles, public transportation, postal workers, emergency vehicles and school buses.

Violations that could affect your insurance rate also vary from state to state, but some infractions such as a speeding will be reported in every state. If you are responsible for causing an accident, you will typically have an increase in your insurance rates. In most situations, the more money your insurance company is required to payout due to your negligence, the higher your rates will be increased.

Although there are several violations that can increase your insurance rates, a reckless driving violation is typically the violation that causes the highest increase in insurance rates. Other violations such as DUI, driving without a license, speeding, failure to stop improper lane change or veering from left to center will also usually cause your insurance rates to increase.

All states have a point system for violations. For each violation you are charged with, you will have a specific amount of points attached to your driving record and the more points you have the higher of a risk you are to insure. Fortunately, overtime your points will be deleted from your driving record which will help to lower your insurance rates. If you have previous violations such as a speeding ticket that also resulted in a seat belt violation, it is important to keep track of your total points so you can notify your insurance company when the points go down to find out if you qualify for a lower rate.
